Goondiwindi's Kerri Robertson has taken over the reins as Queensland Ag Shows’ Next Generation Committee president.

Mrs Robertson, who operates a mixed livestock and cropping property with husband Tom as well as running a successful blinds business, was elected at Queensland Ag Shows’ Annual General Meeting in Brisbane on Sunday.

Joining Mrs Robertson is Dirranbandi journalist Andrea Crothers as vice-president, Bundaberg solicitor Brianna Hockey as treasurer, and Brisbane-based DEHP intelligence support officer Jessica Kerr as secretary.

The Next Generation Committee – which acts as a youth steering group for the state body’s 129 agricultural shows – is entering its ninth year since forming.

Mrs Robertson has served on the committee for the past six years and said the group had developed substantially in that time.

The 31-year-old said the committee had now “found its groove and narrowed its focus to operate as effectively as it can.”

“Like many groups, there’s been times when we’ve spread ourselves very thin, but we’re now really honing our purpose; which is to support Queensland Ag Shows in best serving our grass roots shows,” Mrs Robertson said.

Moving forward, she said the committee aimed to continue addressing issues affecting the show movement.

“The real issues for many shows are concerns like volunteers, financials, compliance, legality side of things and lack community of engagement,” Mrs Robertson said.

“Though we don’t know the answers to all of these issues, Next Gen plays a vital role in strengthening QCAS’ network across the state through youth initiatives.

“By working together we can build a stronger, more sustainable show movement into the future.”

This year saw the Next Generation Committee increase from 10 to 15 delegates.

Mrs Robertson this was the outcome of a strategic planning meeting held by the committee in October last year.

“Queensland Ag Shows represents 129 local show societies, within 11 regions,” Mrs Robertson said.

“There was great enthusiasm to execute key initiatives and, combined with increased interest in the committee, it seemed a natural step to broaden our steering committee to 15 members for 2016.

“I welcome all new executive members and I look forward to achieving some great things together.”
